Confirmation

Confirmation for Epiphany will be celebrated
at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, 2012,
at the Cathedral of St. Paul.

The Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation together constitute the Sacraments of Christian Initiation.

It is evident from its celebration that the effect of the Sacrament of Confirmation is the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost. From this fact, Confirmation brings an increase and deepening of baptismal grace. It roots us more deeply in our relationship with God and more firmly to Jesus. It increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us. It also gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action. Like Baptism, it is only given once. (Catechism of the Catholic Church #1302)

Following please find answers to some of our most frequently asked questions:

  • Confirmation is a two-year program at Epiphany. Archbishop Nienstedt has indicated that he prefers an upper high school age for Confirmation as well as a two-year preparatory process.
  • First year Confirmation candidates need only attend faith formation classes. Second year candidates attend a series of meetings, a retreat, an interview, and complete two reflection papers in addition to their faith formation classes. Youth in 10th grade who were not enrolled in 9th grade will be given makeup materials to complete prior to receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation in addition to their faith formation classes.
  • All candidates are asked to complete 15 hours of community service in preparation for Confirmation, some of which should be done at the parish. Service can be completed during a candidate’s 9th or 10th grade year. Service log sheets can be found online - see the links at the bottom of this page.
  • We offer a variety of faith formation models. Youth may attend weekly sessions offered from 6:45PM-8:00PM on Wednesdays or from 7:00PM-8:15PM on Sundays. We also offer a homeschool option in an effort to accommodate the busy lives of today’s teenagers. Materials are provided and assignment deadlines are staggered to provide flexibility. Staff support is also provided.
  • Catholic high school students do not need to attend faith formation sessions. If your son or daughter attends a Catholic high school, you only need to register them in their 10th grade year. There is no fee for Catholic high school students. Please indicate on the registration form that they attend a Catholic high school. We do ask our Catholic high school students to complete their immediate Confirmation preparation with the parish community, which include special Confirmation meetings, a retreat, an interview, and the completion of two reflective papers.
  • Confirmation for the 2011-2012 faith formation year will be celebrated at 7PM on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at the Cathedral.
  • Youth in grades 9-12 are invited and encouraged to attend a variety of youth ministry events throughout the year. Please watch the parish Website and bulletin or check the bulletin board outside the youth room for news on upcoming events.
  • Don’t worry if you’ve sent in your registration form but have not heard anything back. All youth registered by the August 1 deadline are guaranteed placement in their session of choice. Please review the registration materials for information pertaining to late registrations.
  • Schedules will be posted on the parish Website in early August. Please check then for more information on class dates.
